My weekend away

I've been somewhat slack in posting here this week.  It's because I am so busy recovering and catching up from being away from home for three days! :)  That's right!  This home body and introvert left town!

While at work last Thursday I just decided to text my sister in Kansas City and ask her if she was busy for the weekend.  She was so excited! Just so happened she had no kids or husband for the weekend and was so happy I would consider coming up!  I sent my husband a message telling him what I had decided to do for the weekend.  He was amazed!

Friday morning after dropping my son at school I set out for the four hour drive.  It was a really nice drive.  I took my time, listened to an audio book, and just relaxed.  In fact, my whole weekend was a nice relaxing time.

  • We visited a winery and did a wine tasting.  I bought a really nice bottle to take home.
  • We had sushi!  Something I don't get much at home.
  • Went to IKEA!!!  That was an out of body experience! :)
  • We dressed up and went to a very elegant restaurant.
  • I got me a new phone with the watch (Samsung Galaxy S8). I love it!
Below are some pictures that I remembered to take! I hope to get back on track with more posting.

I mentioned in my "Beginnings" post that I was picking up the camera that I bought back when our oldest was still in school.  It was a really nice camera then and still is.  It will do anything that I am qualified to do with a camera.  My only issue with using this camera is getting my pictures HERE.  I am on the hunt for the cable to upload them to my computer.  It has been misplaced over the years of no use.

I don't profess to be anywhere near a pro at photography.  I don't even want to take a class.  I just want to take nice pictures of things that interest me. Try different setting and compare the same scene.

Pinterest is an interest!

I know you won't believe this but I just joined the millions of people who are on Pinterest!  I always assumed that it was tied to and I don't  Now that I have some time (it's quickly filling up with things I am finding I like to do) I decided to look into it.  OMgoodness!  I will be busy for a very long time.

I'll have to be very careful not to let this "browsing" consume too much of my time and take away from all the things I actually am doing in life.

My Pinterest board is on my sideboard here. ☺

My Reading Habits

I've always loved reading.  My old blog began as a reader blog that warped into a homesteading blog.  {{Sigh}}  another leg of my journey in this life...

I can be found on Goodreads where I often times set too lofty of a reading goal for the year.  I don't think I have never NOT reached my goal but it leaves me stressed out.  I lowered my goal this year and of course I'm having a stellar year.

I was also involved in a reading challenge to read 100 classics in 5 years.  I am seriously falling short as my 5 year mark is July 2017.  I'm about 40 books short.   Oh well, I gave it a good shot.  Now the only "challenge" I am really in is 1 Million pages.  There is no time frame for that.  In fact I will be lucky to reach it before I die.

I just finished listening to...

It is a juvenile fiction of the fantasy/magic variety.  I've been trying to shake it up a little and know what my "grand-kids" might be reading.  Not a bad read.  It is book one in a trilogy.

I am currently reading...

This one was recommended to me by my sister.  It is partly to help me on my journey to Find Me.  It's attempting to help me do what I like without caring what others think of me for it.  I'm not very far into it because my hands have been very busy with all my other activities.  I did enjoy the beginning, I just need to take some time to sit and do nothing but read for an hour.

I am currently listening to...

Book 3 in a trilogy... Not sure what I expected from these books but once I started I had to see it through to the end.  They are in the category of Fantasy/Romance.  Geez, there is quite a bit of sexual content to them.

1,000,000 Pages status:
This year I have read 8,206 pages
Since I began this challenge in 2012 I have read 78,028 pages! (see what I mean?!)

Adult coloring

While shopping the craft section for yarn my eyes caught sight of those coloring books and pencils that you see on the end caps at Wal-Mart.  Now, I've seen them before and thought they looked interesting but never had the time to do anything like that.  This time they were on sale so I did not pass them up.  I purchased one and a box of 36 coloring pencils.

This is really a relaxing mindless activity.  I can let my mind go anywhere and it won't matter to the project before me.

Just another thing that I am going to enjoy doing.

This week in Knitting

Catchy title isn't it?! :)

I thought I would cover each day one of the things that I am "doing" to Find Me.  Tuesday is a good day for knitting because I can link up with others at Frontier Dreams and share my progress.

Last week I finished this hat with our school colors.

Then I quickly cast on this Watson's scarf to go with it.  I think this one will take more than a few days at it is a long scarf.

A great Christmas gift for my littlest "step-grandson".  (My daughter is not married to his father.)

I also cast on a sock project that can travel with me.  The scarf doesn't travel well as it there are too many color changes.  I have always wanted to make socks and now I am going to dedicate time to doing it.

Our baby

I know, I hate it when I hear mothers describe their last child at home as "Our Baby".  Really!  That is something we should not do as it never stops.  My mother still calls me her baby girl!  I'm 48 years old!

So, our youngest has six five weeks until graduation. I have been looking forward to this day for 12 years!  I know I must be the worst kind of mother!  But the public school system is something I am so ready to be done with  and let's just face it, I'm tired!  That and Jeremy had ADHD which required a lot of my time to stay on top of his grades and be his "cheerleader".

Jeremy is trying to get into the Army.  He has a history of ADHD but has been off his medication for two years.  When he went off his meds his GPA actually improved.  He's done very well.  He ran cross country and track these last two years and had strength training as well. During this time he has taken the dreaded ASVAB many times with varying results.

He has a wonderful recruiter who is working very hard to satisfy the MEPS doctors so that they will allow him to continue with his application.  We have been working on this since February 27th.  Seems like a very long time ago. Not knowing what his future is going to be right now makes it seem even longer!

We have announcements for graduation almost ready to send.  We are holding them because we hope to put in them his acceptance into the Army.  The party is planned, the caterer has been secured and we wait.

I am the most impatient person on the planet.  I call or contact the recruiter every week or couple of days. (depending on my level of anxiety)  But wait and send up prayers for him we will!

I have a friend who has talked a lot about hiking with her husband.  While my husband was on an 80 mile bicycle ride last Saturday and Sunday I decided to see if Linda would be interested in going for a hike some time. Wow did she ever.  "How about tomorrow" was her response.  So I jumped on the opportunity.

Sunday morning at 10:00 in the morning we hit our first trail.  This was an experience to say the least. Little did I know she is directionally challenged!  We made one wrong turn and ended up on what began as a 1.5 mile hike ending in a 6.5 mile hike!  We were off the trail by 1:30.  It was a beautiful day and I had plenty of water.  But I went home and found an app for my phone that would track me.  I also went to and subscribed so that I can load maps of trails all over the United States.

I will be taking more pictures with my phone in the future!

Last Saturday evening my son and I went to the movies while hubby was on his bicycle ride.  After the movie there were still plenty of hours left in my evening so I dug out my knitting supplies that had been packed away some time ago.

I opened a new Ravelry account and began browsing for patterns to make hats, scarves, and mittens for family members for Christmas.  I found a simple hat and settled down with a glass of wine and some easy listening music and enjoyed my evening immensely!

Yes, I think I'm going to like it here!

This is my first finished project on this leg of my journey!

Beginning a new journey

Without sounding too mellow dramatic I have to say that I never thought I would be feeling like I do right now.  While raising our three children I always said I was looking forward to empty nest.  That I didn't understand why so many mothers seem to lose there minds.  Ummm, now I know.  I feel completely lost.  Don't get me wrong, hubby and I do a great deal together but even he recently challenged me to find things that I like to do for myself as I was smothering him.

I've done many things over the years that I enjoy.  Those things were dropped due to time and the inability to focus on anything longer than 15 minutes.  These are the things that I am picking back up.  Among them are blogging, reading, and knitting.  I really enjoy listening to audio books while knitting so this is going to be great fun!  And hopefully I will have something to say here in blog-land. :)

Then there are things that I have decided to try.  I have a really nice camera that I bought when our oldest was still in high school.  I want to learn to take a really good picture so that I can document other things that I am doing.  I also went on a hike with a friend and really enjoyed it!  I have put a new app on my phone and plan to get out there more often.  This too is an opportunity to take pictures of nature.  I love being active so I have started Zumba.  I will be attending my second session this evening.  I bought a DVD so that I can learn the moves.  It was fun and I am looking forward to going tonight.

There is still the fact that our son is still waiting to hear from the Army whether or not he is accepted.  He will graduate high school in six weeks and still doesn't know his future.  The other factor in my life is, my 92 year old grandmother lives with me.  She is beginning to need more "attention".  I still work full time so I pay someone to come "visit" her a couple times a week.  This keeps her from talking my ears off after a long day at the office.

So my entries here will be all over the board for a time.  There is so much going because I am trying EVERYTHING.
